How have studies into memory impairment helped our understanding of how memory works?

Due to the challenging work of neuropsychologists and their case studies we have began to understand the work of impairments in memory. These case studies that have been performed should play an important role in an essay - if you are writing an essay (it seems like this is an essay question you are asking help on). Think about the advantages of these case studies e.g. helping recovery of patients, and the disadvantages.
