Ration shops are called fair price shops because through these shops the government authority sells essential commodities to common people at a reasonable price. Even those people living 'below poverty line', are allowed to buy those items at subsidized price. The price difference between open market price and fair price shop price is huge, is compensated by the government for the benefit of the common people.
