Joseph was one of the sons of Jacob - who fathered the 12 founders of the 12 tribes of Israel. He had a gift for interpreting dreams, and, as his father's 'favourite' was given a coat of many colours (a real luxury in those days) making his brothers very jealous. To add insult to injury Joseph claimed he had dreams that predicted he would one day rule over them all. In a fit of rage they sold him as a slave to passing traders, when he was taken to Egypt to be sold to a rich man, Potiphar. He trusted Joseph as the head of his household, but when Joseph refused the sexual dvances of Potiphar's wife, she claimed he had attacked her, and so Potiphar had Joseph flung into prison. Whilst there, Joseph interpreted dreams and became famous. When the Pharaoh had disturbing dreams, he sent for Joseph who predicted seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. Joseph was made overseer second only to Pharaoh to ensure that there were enough supplies stocked up to cope with the famine years. During these years, Joseph's family came to Egypt seeking food. At first they didn't recognise Joseph, and, after putting his brothers to a test of their contrition, revealed himself, and the family were united. The story of Joseph can be read at different levels - as a straight piece of Biblical history, or as a wonderful lesson in human nature and forgiveness.
