Why did Voltaire spend a lot of time in Protestant countries especially Switzerland?

Voltaire also had enemies in the Catholic Church. Unlike most other Enlightenment thinkers, Voltaire did not consider himself a Christian and openly mocked established religions--Christianity in particular. He therefore spent many years in Protestant countries, where he also succeeded in offending political and religious authorities.
