The tree of the knowledge represented the knowledge of sin, and the tree of life leads to eternal life .
Gen 3:22 - 23
And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Rev 2:7
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Rev 22:1 - 4
And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

One of the first commandments which the Lord gave to our first patents was "To multiply and replenish the earth". This they were unable to do unless they used their agency. For they knew neither good nor evil.To be able to do this they had to be tempted, and this could only be done by a fallen one, one who was cast out of heaven to roam the earth tempting man. This fallen one was Satan.
He was cast out of heaven without a body, so to be able to temp Adam and Eve he had to use somebody or some creature which had a body. He chose the serpent to represent him, there being no other person upon the face of the earth. The serpent was easily swayed to represent Satan and do his bidding. (Remember that Adam and Eve and all the animals could communicate with each other, they all had a common language).
Having been commanded by the Lord not to eat of the tree of good and evil lest they should die in their sin, The Lord added that they might choose for themselves. This then turned the commandment into a transgression of the law rather than a sin.
Having been tempted by the serpent to partake of the fruit of the tree of Good and Evil, Eve could see the wisdom in doing so, so that children might be born to her and Adam. Therefor fulfilling the Lords commandment. Adam saw the wisdom in this transgression "So that man might be".
Satan had knowledge of Gods plan for Adam and Eve, but he lacked wisdom. If he had tempted them to partake of the Tree of Life, and they had done so, then tempted them to partake of the Tree of Good and Evil, they would have lived forever in their sins and the Lords plan would have failed, Satan would have won. and the Lords atonement would have had no effect.
Some have said that Adam and Eve should not have sinned, and having not done so would have remained happy in the Garden of Eden. Those having so said have not realized that they would not have been born to have made such a statement.
God knew just what Adam and Eve would do, for he knew them before He placed them upon the earth. He also knew Satan and that he would make the mistake of tempting our first parents to partake of the Tree of Good and Evil first. Just as Adam and Eve had to make a choice so did Satan.
