Nylon was invented in the United States by chemist Wallace Carothers and his team at DuPont in the 1930s. The first commercial nylon product, nylon 6,6, was introduced in 1939 as a synthetic fiber for textiles. While the concept of synthetic fibers existed earlier, nylon is credited as the first entirely synthetic fiber made from petrochemicals.
