How did Jekyll Island get its name?

Jekyll Island is named after Sir Joseph Jekyll, a British financier and politician who lived in the 18th century. Sir Joseph Jekyll was a friend of General James Oglethorpe, the founder of the colony of Georgia, and it is believed that the island was named in his honor.
