Why was the U-boat invented?

U-boat or Undersea boat was the German name of submarine. The vessels were primarily build to enforce economic blockade of enemy by harassing the mercantile shipping. It also proved handful against enemy's surface vessels and accounted for five British ships in the first ten weeks of WWI.
