How do you teach ESL while sitting with a student in a content classroom?

Here are just a few suggestions: Encourage the regular or core subject Classroom Teacher to label the classroom environment with English Words. For example, write the Word door on a card and tape it to the door. Do the same for other items in the room such as window, desk, board, etc. Review this briefly with the student daily or as often as possible. Concrete objects associated with Words often help. Also, vocabulary used in the core subject should be addressed. Try illustrations (allow students to illustrate) and/or modeling the meaning of terms whenever possible. Use concrete examples whenever possible. Assist with writing and reading (phonemes/decoding skills). Provide immediate positive feedback. These are just a few suggestions.
