How did rhea and Mother Earth fool Cronus?

Rhea and Mother Earth fooled Cronus by tricking him into thinking that Rhea had given him their youngest child to devour, when in fact she had secretly hidden and protected the child, Zeus, from him. Cronus unknowingly swallowed a rock wrapped in swaddling clothes instead of the baby Zeus.
