Why are there round fields?

In the US the most common reason is that those fields (frequently in the western regions) are the ones which are irrigated by a pivot irrigation system. A long line of sprinklers rotates slowly around the field creating the circle. Many times the farmer simply chooses not to farm the remaining areas, but if he does, it's usually with a different cropping or ranching system.
