What is a modal scale?

A modal scale is a musical scale derived from the modes of the diatonic scale, each of which starts on a different degree of the scale. The seven modes include Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian, each with its own unique pattern of whole and half steps.
