Why did mum leave the kids alone the night the family watched corrie in the book lily alone?

In the book "Lily Alone" by Jacqueline Wilson, Lily's mom left the kids alone because she had to work an evening shift as a waitress and couldn't find a sitter. She thought it would be okay since Lily is responsible and could look after her younger siblings.
