How were the slaves treated in the constitution?

In the original version of the US Constitution, slavery was permitted in some states and prohibited in others. There is nothing about how slaves are to be treated. It was understood at the time that slave owners would treat their slaves any way that they wanted to, much as farmers treated their farm animals any way they wanted to.
