Why is remembrance Day observed?

In England and other commonwealth nations, it is called "Remembrance Day," and it serves to remember and honor the people who died for their country during the first and second world wars. In the US, it was originally called Armistice Day when it was established in 1919. These days, Americans call it Veterans Day, and it too honors and remembers those who died serving their country. These memorial holidays are observed on November 11.
