What year were people allowed to put 2 or more races for the census?

In the United States, people were allowed to select two or more races on the census starting with the 2000 Census. This change was implemented to better reflect the growing diversity of the population and to accommodate individuals who identify with multiple racial backgrounds. Prior to this, respondents could only select one race.
