If you're self employed, you start with Form 1040. You also need to fill out Schedule C (Profit or Loss from Business) or, if your business expenses are less than $5,000, Schedule C-EZ (Net Profit from Business). Entries from C or C-EZ go on line 12 of 2009 Form 1040.
As a self employed person, you must pay Self-Employment Tax for Social Security and Medicare. You figure this tax on Schedule SE (Self-Employment Tax). Entries from Schedule SE go on line 56 of 2009 Form 1040.
Also, don't forget that you're entitled to a credit for one-half of the Self-Employment Tax that you paid. That amount is entered on line 27 of 2009 Form 1040.
