What did the US gain from the Northwest Ordinance?

The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 accelerated the westward expansion of the United States by granting the US the right to settle in the land north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River. Until then, this area had been forbidden to the US for settlement.
