People's attitudes changed because people were happier. In the Middle Ages, Rome fell. Many books and knowledge were forever destroyed. People had no happiness. But then the thoughts of Ancient Greek and Rome came back around, and that started the Renaissance. So, they were happier and their thoughts were less focused on afterlife as it used to be. Now, people were experiencing "enlightment" and "living in the moment". These were all new things for them.

Hope this helps, I'm doing an assignment for school that has the similar topic :)
