Merriam-Webster's medical definition for "institutionalize" is "to

accustom (a person) so firmly to the care and supervised routine of

an institution as to make incapable of managing life outside." When

an elderly person is committed to a nursing home long enough, he

can become so accustomed to the way of life inside a care home that

he would have a hard time adjusting to a new environment with new

people, such as a transition from a nursing facility to a memory

care center. Novelty can induce fear in the elderly and create

emotional havoc.
