How did the garment cardigan get the name?

The garment cardigan is named after James Brudenell, the 7th Earl of Cardigan, who popularized the knitted garment during the Crimean War in the 1850s. He wore a knitted wool vest to stay warm during the harsh conditions, and the style became associated with him. As a result, the term "cardigan" was adopted to describe this type of open-front sweater.
