The Union planned to advance on two fronts and blockade the Confederacy thereby worsening its already vastly inferior industry. The North fought with one hand behind its back hence the war lasted 4 years and evidenced by the blockade and Sherman's March they planned to destroy the Confederate economy first and their army second. The Confederates were split between defending the South or attacking the North and when Lee decided to attack the North many Southerners deserted.
