How did Mickey Mantle hurt his knee?

During the 1951 World Series, between the NY Yankees and the NY Giants, Mantle tripped on a drain cover in the outfield. As best can be determined, he tore his ACL doing so -- and orthopedic surgery at the time could not repair this injury.
