Labs make lousy outdoor dogs. Labs as a breed are highly social and all dogs are pack animals meaning they crave companionship. They do love being outside but they love being outside with their people.
Labs left outside alone find ways to entertain themselves - these include barking, digging, chewing on anything they can get their teeth on, and escape. While a high energy breed, they make Excellent indoor companions. But they do require daily exercise of 2-3 miles, multiple short walks or trips outside to potty, and most live to play fetch and will enjoy an hour or so of that daily.
