How does atticus treat mayella and bob Ewell?

When Bob tells him he's going to regret what he's done, he spits in Atticus's face, and Atticus just makes a "smart" remark saying "i wish Bob Ewell didn't chew tobacco." He thought it was just Bob's anger speaking, he didn't think he would actually hurt him or his kids.
