When was the first gorrila discovered?

The first gorilla was scientifically described in 1847 by the German zoologist Thomas Staughton Savage, who encountered the species in the forests of Africa. However, gorillas had been known to local populations long before this formal description. The first documented sighting by a Western explorer occurred in 1848 when the American explorer Paul du Chaillu observed them in Gabon.
