What is the theme of The Father by Hugh Garner?

The story is about a father and son relationship.

Basically, the father is an alcoholic who doesn't know his son any more than any other person does.

This fact can be proven by many examples. For instance, he did not know that his son was an exceptional swimmer, did not know that he had craftsmanship and also didn't know who his friends were.

In this tory, the father tries to bring back their relationship but he fails because he gets drunk and embarrasses his son in front of his friends and his friends' fathers.
