Jose Rizal in Berlin was impoverished and sick because his allowance from the Philippines has not yet received and he have to eat a meal which only consists of a bread and water or vegetable soup so he can save some money for the printing costs of his first novel, Noli me Tangere. That's why it is considered as Jose Rizal's darkest winter.
