To perform the Heimlich maneuver on someone who is choking, stand behind the person and wrap your arms around their waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it just above their navel, then grasp it with your other hand. Deliver quick, upward thrusts inward and upward until the obstruction is expelled or the person can breathe again. If the person becomes unconscious, call for emergency help and begin CPR.
