The major function of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) in skeletal muscle contraction is to store and release calcium ions (Ca²⁺). When a muscle fiber is stimulated by an action potential, the SR releases calcium into the cytoplasm, which binds to troponin and facilitates the interaction between actin and myosin filaments. This process leads to muscle contraction. After contraction, the SR reabsorbs calcium, allowing the muscle to relax.
