Why great and greet pronounce diffrerently?

The double 'ee retains the long e sound. However, in the Word great, the e is silent, so it sounds just the same as grate.

They installed a grate over a great big drainage ditch.

My sister thought I would grate the cheese, but doing the work wasn't so great.

I wanted to greet the homeless man who slept on a heating grate.
