What is ironic about the way Tom conducts himself on the witness stand in To Kill a Mockingbird?

Tom is calm and reacts gentle. not the violent man that the stand expected to see. Tom says that he felt bad for Mayella Ewell, for (her crapy life) so he is actually trying to help her.
