The giant clam is primarily a herbivore, as it mainly feeds on phytoplankton and algae through a process called filter feeding. However, it can also derive some nutrients from the symbiotic relationship it has with photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae, which live within its tissues. While it does not consume other animals, its diet is primarily plant-based, classifying it as a herbivore.
