What is the effect of mortal sin?

The connection you have between you and God is broken. If you were to die in this state of Mortal Sin and weren't planning to seek a confession then you would not gain entry into the kingdom of God. The only way to fix this connection between you and God is to repent, go to a confession, and never commit the said sin again. Your connection with the Lord should be well on it's path of recovery.
