Where are sound or light waves stretched out?

Sound waves can be stretched out in larger spaces like concert halls or outdoor venues where the sound has more space to travel before reaching the listener. Light waves can be stretched out in the form of redshift when celestial objects are moving away from us in the expanding universe, causing their light waves to be shifted towards longer, redder wavelengths.
