A compound eye is made up of numerous tiny units called ommatidia, each functioning as a separate visual receptor. Depending on the species, a compound eye can consist of anywhere from a few dozen to several thousand ommatidia. For example, a housefly's compound eye contains around 4,000 ommatidia, while some species of dragonflies can have over 30,000. This structure allows for a wide field of vision and enhanced motion detection.
