Tides are created primarily by the gravitational pull of the moon and, to a lesser extent, the sun on Earth's oceans. As the moon orbits Earth, its gravity causes water to bulge out in the direction of the moon, creating a high tide. On the opposite side of the Earth, another high tide occurs due to the centrifugal force from the Earth-moon system's rotation. This cyclic rise and fall of ocean levels results in the regular pattern of tides.
