There are thought to be thousands of species of 'fruit flies', (there are over 1400 described species). The term 'fruit fly' is most often used to describe flies that hang around ripe and over-ripe fruit (family Drosophillidae), rather than a different family that can damage fruit crops, which some consider true fruit flies. The most highly studied species is D. melanogaster, but several species are found commonly in kitchens around the world.
