What is difference between profession and confession?

I had the same question and the answer that I have arrived at is that a profession is a public acknowledgement of something that may or may not be true. Whereas a confession has the idea of ownership and is assured.

In the King James Bible the terms seem to be used in this way:

Romans 1:22 "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools"

1Jo 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. (other examples Romans 10:9).
