It means pretty much what it says - better to have whatever it was happen late than to not have it at all. You might hear this when something didn't happen or arrive exactly when expected, but did show up or occur.
It means it is often better to do something after it is due than never to do it.

Its never too late to do start something new!!

It is better to do something later than never do it at all.
It means that doing something a bit late than you should have done is always better than not doing it at all....
If you think about it for a minute, you can figure it out. Wouldn't it be better to have something done late instead of never done at all? That's all this means.
She meant that an action or event was better to take place later than it should have as opposed to not at all. For example; Someone asks someone out that they have had a crush on for years, someone could then say it's better late than never.
It means that it's better to have done something than to have done nothing at all
It's a pun based on the mean of late. Late = not on time, but it also means dead. The late so-and-so means that so-and-so is deceased. So it's better to be late (not on time) than to be the late (dead person.)
