Here is what The Bible has to say, in regard to your question, which is, if we have the ability to be guided by our own values and beliefs.

Jeremiah 10: 23 reads. "It does not belong to man/woman who is walking even to direct his/her step. And Jesus said the same in different Words in Matthew 4: 4, and reads. " Man/woman must live, not on bread alone, but on every Word that comes from Jehovah God's mouth.

2 Timothy 3: 16,17 shows that the Bible is a letter from God and beneficial for our teaching and setting things straight. And Isaiah 48: 17,18 shows that God's determination has always been that we be successful in life, in these Words. "I, Jehovah, am your God, The One teaching you to benefit yourself, The One guiding you in the way you should walk. If only you would pay attention to my commandments! Then your peace would become just like a river etc...

Psalm 119: 165 reminds us that abundant peace belongs to those who love God's law; Nothing can make them stumble and Isaiah 32: 18 reads. " My people ( God's people ) will dwell in a peaceful abiding place etc..

However that does not mean that those who walk in harmony with God's requirements will be trouble free. It means that we will be equipped to make the best decision in every daily challenging circumstances, with the knowledge and support of Jehovah God.

So to answer your question concerning our ability to guide ourselves, the answer is that we were not created with that ability. For eample, one scholar observes " The inference of God's commands in Genesis 2: 16,17 is that only God knows what is good.... for humanity and only God knows what is good for us to enjoy life.

Adam and Eve did have the freedom to choose whether they would obey God or not. The consequence of their choice in written in Romans 5: 12 in these Words. " That is why, just as through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because they had all sinned.

The Word sin means ( missed the goal or not reaching a goal, way, mark, or right point.

We have to admit that we do not always know what the outcome of our choices will be; nor do we know whether they will turn out for our good every time. That is why we so often see people make choices or decissions with all good intentions--only to have the result in suffering, disaster, or tragedy.

Here is what Proverbs 14: 12 has to say. " There is a way that seems right to a man/woman, But in the end it leads to death. History is full of people who persued a course that they were convinced was good, only to find out that they were wrong. Good intentions do not shield someone from the consequences of bad decisions.

God's kingdom: Read Daniel 2: 44 and Matthew 6: 9,10( government ) is going to undo all the harm that millenniums of human rule have done , due to Adam and Eve's inheritance.

The goal that mankind has missed is to live forever in a perfect environement in prefect health.

According to Psalm 37: 29 the righteous ones will possess the earth and they will live forever on it, which has always been God's purpose that mankind has missed.
