All snakes have this adaptation to help them conserve water. They do not have a bladder, and therefore do not pass liquid waste in the form of urine the way we do - instead, uric acid is excreted as a semi-solid white mass, which quickly hardens and becomes chalky. This is mostly found in desert snakes though.
