According to the following passage it was James, the brother of John (both sons of Zebedee):

Acts 12:1-2 (King James Version)1Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.

2And he killed James the brother of John with the sWord.

The Apostle killed in Acts (12:2) was James the Less, who was the brother of John son of Zebedee, through their relationship to their designated mother, the Virgin Mary. He was the first of the Twelve apostles to be killed, or the first of the Twelve Apostles to depart from this realm.
