James Baldwin's essay is about racial issues in America. He talks about the struggles he had living in America during segregation. Baldwin argues that a person shouldn't have to give up their culture or heritage to be a part of society. He talks about how if a person wants to live a fulfilled life they must build up character. I think "the triumph of the human spirit is the feeling of happiness a person gets from a major accomplishment. Baldwin feels that overcoming racial segregation will be a major accomplishment, and that it is worth fighting for. Baldwin had to overcome major things in his personal life also in order to live a happy life.
