The most widely known are the safety-toe shoes where steel or plastic composite materials form a shield over the toes.

Safety shoes are also available with steel shanks that prevent sharp objects from penetrating the sole of the shoe - and the foot, and with metatarsal shields that protect the boney part of the foot just in front of the ankle.
