James Monroe was a founding member of the Democratic-Republican Party, which he joined in the early 1790s. The party was established in opposition to the Federalist Party and promoted agrarian interests, states' rights, and a strict interpretation of the Constitution. Monroe served as a prominent figure in the party throughout his political career, including during his presidency from 1817 to 1825.
