What is istosasy?

Isostasy is the balance between the upward force of the Earth's crust (lithosphere) floating on the denser underlying mantle, and the downward force of gravity. It explains how the crust adjusts its elevation in response to the distribution of mass on the Earth's surface, such as mountain ranges or ice sheets. This equilibrium is important in understanding the topography of the Earth's surface.
