The Permian period extinction, also known as the Great Dying, occurred around 252 million years ago and led to the loss of approximately 90% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial vertebrate species. However, certain groups like some insects, small reptiles, and the ancestors of mammals survived this catastrophic event. Additionally, some marine life forms, such as certain types of fish and invertebrates, also managed to endure the extinction and later diversified in the aftermath. This resilience allowed them to thrive in the post-extinction ecosystems.
