What is a desert zeugen?

Rock masses are composed of horizontal layers of hard & soft rocks. Mechanical weathering causes the opening of such joints on the rock surface. Wind abrasion through the joints wear away the softer rocks & form grooves & fissures, while the harder rocks stand above as ridges. These features are known as Zeugen, which are common in Soneran Desert of U.S.A.
