Why western country is called as western?

The point of reference is the Mediterranean Sea. Points to the east were referred to as the Near East and Far East. Conversely, points to the West were referred to as Western countries.

In common speech, it indicates a Euro-American nation, as opposed to Asian, African, or South-American, and reflects an opinion of cultural and economic superiority.
